Love obsidian! It was one of my first rockhound finds, and I still have a large chunk of snowflake obsidian sitting in our back yard, that I will never get around to cutting and polishing. I generally come home from South Sun with some obsidian beads because they are so pretty.

This is good advice. I know a bead store owner who washes any beads she gets before selling. I think this is a good practice all around, since so many beads come with dust and dirt and you can never be sure from where they originated.

Also, whenever I buy stones/coral/pearls, etc. I always hand wash it in warm, sudsy water it before I start stringing it. Dyed coral especially, because if it is dyed, it will probably need several rinsing before the excess dye washes out. Better you remove the extra dye, than your customer has a red ring around her neck or white collar.

Hi Tish,

It wouldn’t be possible to tell you whether or not it’s dyed for sure without looking at it. It is most likely dyed with a heating process, where the heat allows the dye to permeate throughout the stone, coloring the inside as well. This is how a quality dye job is done. The color of agate can vary greatly, so it may not be dyed at all. Look at this wikipedia article for information on the variations in color of agate.

If the color is much darker around the cracks of the stone, or if the color is uneven or patchy, it is most-likely dyed.
