About St. Patrick’s Day:

This holiday, which has been observed by the people of Ireland for more than a thousand years, marks the anniversary of St. Patrick’s preferred day of feasting, as well as of his death.

The day falls during the Christian period of lent, and Irish tradition holds that prohibitions on certain food and drink are lifted for this day, so they would feast and dance and have a generally fabulous time.

Today people across the globe celebrate; be it with parades, pub crawls, or just by wearing green and having a Guinness.

Do you have any special way of celebrating? Leave us a comment and let us know!

March/Marzo: Aquamarine

Were you born in March? Know someone who was? Well in honor of this lovely month, here are some interesting facts about its birthstone, Aquamarine:

  • This stone got its name (which literally means sea water) in the 19th century, due to its oceanic blue-green hue.
  • Today sky blue is the most valued shade.
  • Sailors are said to have worn this gem believing it protected them from dangers on their sea travels and bring them home healthy.
  • Almost all Aquamarine on the market today is heat-treated to enhance its color
  • Aquamarine is in the Beryl family of minerals, just like its cousin Emerald. Beryl crystals are colorless in their purest form, but trace amounts of iron give the splendid colors that we covet.
  • Spiritually, Aquamarine is held to have a calming and soothing effect on the psyche. Often associated with courage, clarity of thought and communication, and harmony with one’s environment.

Discovery of oldest human decorations – thought to be 82,000 years old

Friday, October 12th, 2007

These finds of handmade beads, in a limestone cave in Morocco, suggest that humans were fashioning purely symbolic objects in Africa 40,000 years before they did it in Europe. Twelve Nassarius shells were perforated in their centres, and showed signs of being suspended or hung. They also appeared to have been covered in red ochre.
